As I understand it, energy cannot be created or destroyed. Yet it can be put in patterns. As we live our lives, the energy in our brains is made into thought patterns...correct?
What happens to this energy, and the pattern it is in, when we die? Does the pattern break apart, or does it stay in its pattern? What if free-floating thought patterns ARE the soul? What if, when we die, this energy pattern goes to a dimension thats compatable with it?

I would say the "soul" is our memories.

The problem with the thread is it assumes the soul exists. That is like contemplating the lock ness monsters dietary habits while not moving to prove its existance. If you google or yahoo soul and research you will find no field of science or medince proving it, and few attempting to. The human person is the perfect test object because every year ten of thousands are examined and never a trace of the soul found.
As far as applying physics laws to it realize that since no hypothsis exists on its make-up or nature at this point I would say the question is moot . |

In a religious context, and as it relates to the Bible, I always thought of the heart as being the human thoughts and emotions (thought patterns as you put it). At least that is how I read it. When the Bible mentions the heart, it is talking about those human thoughts and emotions that are created through the power of the brain.

I think the mind is related to the soul. In Terri's case the mind has no way to manifest itself. You need the physical thing, the cerebral cortex, to manifest the spiritual thing, the mind.
However her soul is manifest in the life in her body. |

the soul is a metaphor for life force and consciousness, the science of which is hard to discern because the more intelligent we get, the more complex and harder to understand our brains are, and as one increases with the other, maybe we will never fully understand the link between the physical brain and the metaphysical mind/consciousness. so a long time ago this was labelled 'soul', filed under 'religious/God', and therefore relatively untouched by practical science, only by philosophy and religion.
ps Medical science is keeping terri schiavo alive. to blindly claim 'its not her brain, therefore its the soul' is illogical. what causes the knee jerk reflex? its not the brain, that doesnt mean its the soul Last edited by stemann; 05-22-2005 at 01:15 PM.
