Gender and the Gospel of Mark (Jesus, translation, elders, Jerusalem)

I am translating the Gospel of Mark, and I am rendering many previously gender exclusive verses as inclusive.

I will post new renderings that I think are cool here.

Example:

ESV Mark 11:23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.

KJV Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Angellous' Authorized Version:

Mark 11. 23 “Truly I say to you, ‘Anyone who says to this mountain, ‘Get up, and be thrown into the sea!,’ and does not doubt in her heart but believes that which is spoken will be, it will be done for her.”

Mark 11.23 “Truly I say to you, ‘Any person who says to this mountain, ‘Get up, and be thrown into the sea!,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that which is spoken will be, it will be done for them.”

I'm not sure what the point is, AE. Are you going to change all references to "he" or "him" to "any person" or just selected ones?

Just selected ones. There is rhyme to reason. Greek is sorta like English in that it has both gender specific masculine words (gender exclusive - male only "he") and phrasing as well as gender inclusive words and phrases (gender inclusive "he").

In English we formerly had both, and now it's changing to include women. In reading these old English translations, one can't tell when the Greek is gender specific or not. Example: Jesus: "Son of Man" or "Son of Humanity"

Here's another one:

11.25 And when you stand praying, forgive (imperative) if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive you of your transgressions

NIV Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

This one works in tension with the concept that Jesus is the Son of Humanity...


11.27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking around the temple, the cheif preists, scribes, and elders came to him 28 And they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do these things?” 29 “Was the baptism of John from heaven or was from human beings? Answer me.”

"Your father" appears in Mark, rendered in my translation as Divine Parent.
