Default A translation of the Gospel According to Mark and Some Breif Study Notes

This is my translation of Mark with some notes. I will add stuff and revise. Comments welcome. I will be translating almost the entire NT this summer, so prayers and happy thoughts are also welcome - I may not translate it again for some time - judgements that I make now will affect most of my career.

The Gospel According to Mark

NOTES:

From this perspective, it seems to me like Jesus was the only person who saw the dove and heard the voice from heaven. Also, he takes the place of John the Baptist. The presentation of John and Jesus are exactly parallel in Mark, with Jesus taking his place as a disciple takes the place of a master.

1.9 And it happened in those days that Jesus of Nazareth of Galilee came and was baptized by John in the Jordan

evbapti, sqh verb indicative aorist passive 3rd person singular from
bapti,zw dip, immerse

1.10 And as he was rising from the water, he saw the heavens divide and the spirit as a dove descend upon him

go up

ei=den verb indicative aorist active 3rd person singular from o`ra,w

scizome, nouj verb participle present passive accusative masculine plural from sci,zw
split, tear, divide

katabai/non verb participle present active accusative neuter singular from
katabai,nw come down, go down, climb down

1.11 And a voice came out of heaven saying, “You are my beloved son, in you I am pleased.”

1.12 And then the spirit drove him into the wilderness.

1.13 And in the wilderness forty days he was tempted by satan, and he was with the animals, and the angels ministered to him

peirazo, menoj verb participle present passive nominative masculine singular from
peira,zw1. try, attempt Ac 9:26; 16:7; 24:6.—2. try, make trial of, put to the testa. generally Mt 16:1; 22:18, 35; Mk 10:2; J 6:6; 1 Cor 10:13; 2 Cor 13:5; Hb 2:18; 11:17; Rv 2:2; 3:10. NOTES:

Verse 15 was the most striking to me. It reveals Mark's take on the teachings of Jesus. The message of Jesus here is eschatological: the time has come, and is now here for God to establish God's kingdom. Both verbs "come" (for time) and "come near" (for kingdom) are in the perfect tense, the same tense used above for "it is written." It has been written, and stands written. The perfect tense is past time with remaining consequences: the time is come and is now here, and the message is still the proclaimation of Christian hope.

NOTES: Interesting here that the words translated "come" and "follow me" are not imperatives (you do this) but are adverbs with imperative force. This may not be too odd - I'll have to look it up, but it is interesting that it's not a verb. My first impression, of course, is that this calling does not have absolute force that Calvinists are so fond of. I chose "people" for "anthropos," a gender-nuetral term for human beings in Greek. If Jesus meant "fishers of men" it would be "aner" which is the gender-exclusive term for male human beings... as it stands, the Greek means both male and female persons.

1.17 And Jesus said to them: Come! Follow me! And I will make you become fishers of people.
