Guyana Government pledges $3.2 million for Caribbean Rastafari Summit in August Saturday, June 18th 2005 The Government of Guyana has given a commitment to the Guyana Rastafari Council (GRC) of $3.2M towards the staging of the 10th Caribbean Rastafari Summit in Guyana. A delegation from the conference secretariat met President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Office of the President on Monday and he made the commitment on behalf of the Government. According to a press release from the GRC the money would be used for the successful staging of the conference, which has an estimated budget of $6.2M and would be held at President's College, Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara from August 1-8. Jagdeo also committed to assist in providing airtime on NCN TV for a live telethon from which it is hoped another $3M would be raised. The telethon is tentatively set for June 26 when the Rastafari community would exhibit its rich creative arts as well as provide entertainment for viewers. Jagdeo also promised the GRC to visit its headquarters in order to see what assistance could be granted for the rehabilitation of the office which was severely damaged by the flood earlier in the year. He also committed to meeting with the GRC to discuss issues and concerns affecting the advancement of the Rastafari Nation in Guyana. Present at the meeting with the President were President of the GRC Ras Simeon (Andrew Williams), Secretary Sister Tekla (Latoya Greene), Treasurer Sister Isis (Rayann Fileen), Conference Chairman Ras Abdalla (Allan La Rose), PRO Ras Richard Taylor and Youth Arm Representative Lester Paul and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism Kenneth Jordan.
