But why? Why would worship require sacrifice? I think of worship as the exact opposite: as soaking in the joy of being, the love inherent in existence, the gift of life and consciousness ... it's about being filled and expanded by my awareness of the unity of all and with all.

As I understand it, it's a sacrifice to not only show your devotion to a god or belief, but it can also be empowering: "I gave up ______ for Lent, and I made through the entire time." It's also a more direct form of resisting temptation, like my mom gives up sweets for every Lent.
