And yes, Booko is right. AF is on it's own. It was originally Army Air Corp and became the Air Force in 1947 with the National Security Act being passed.

I tried to join the Navy. They wouldn't take me because I don't have a spleen. The recruiter actually kicked me out of the door screaming "Get out of here you spleenless b*****d!".
The truth is actually funny. I was about to sign when the recruiter asked me if there was anything else he should know about me. I remembered my surgery to remove a ruptured spleen my freshman year in high school. I told him. He jumped up, hurried over to another desk and brought back a tremendous tome of listed injuries, ailments and what not. After finding the listing for a spleenectomy he told me I was ineligible for service in any of the branches. Including the Coast Guard. Apparently it's because they think I might bleed to death. I asked him if bullet wounds might tend to cause a person to bleed to death. And besides, I was hoping to be stationed on an aircraft carrier. Bleeding to death would be one of the last of my worries. Oh well. A week after being denied military service I called the Peace Corps. They said I lacked the experience and to call them back once I finished my degree. I started drinking shortly after that. I probably wouldn't have passed a psychological evalution anyway. |

The Marines are their own branch, but they are a department of the Navy.

Yes, the Navy is the Corps' corpsmen and docs. Devildogs do their own admin and mostly their own transport. If we need a really big boat, we call the Navy. Marine Corps even has its own jets... |
