Question "Entitlement programs" - please define them.
Hi,

I am a U.S. citizen, but I am interested in political/economic viewpoints from people in other countries too.
There are people who vote on one issue or another.....but I have also spoken with friends/colleagues, who are intelligent, and yet complain about certain economic plans as wasteful. They often show sincere anger over what they term as "entitlement programs". Usually they are thinking about Medicaid, social security, etc.....They state that these terrible "entitlement programs" are what is destroying our economy, our work ethic, family values, etc......

But I often get the impression that they are simply yelling out Limbaugh-esque ditto-points. So I would like to gather a list from you all.
What programs exactly do you consider to be wasteful entitlements?
If you believe strongly that our economy and/or cultural morals can be rallied by doing away with wasteful programs......then list what you would cut.
Also, I would greatly appreciate an explaination of 1. the current financial cost of the program. 2. If you would cut back, or cut out the programs entirely. 3. Discuss what you think the short and longterm effect of cutting this/these program(s) would have on the U.S. and/or your own non-U.S. country.

OK, I will bite. If we stopped providing food and shelter for folks who could work and feed and shelter themselves, they might just get off their butt and go to work. Most will tell you that the reason they stay on assistance is they are receiving a better deal.

The government is at fault as they discourage anyone from not being dependant.

For instance, why could they not keep their health care if they left the welfare rolls?

I believe that Reverand Rick is referring to the oft cited philosophy that the unemployed should be be given support for a limited amount of time.....arbitrarily saaaaayyyyy . . 6 months. After that. Grab a hatchet and head for the wild, . . or . . starve/freeze to death. Your choice.

However, it is not far off the actual fact of how things really are now. The actual countdown clock to starvation/death is 2-5 years depending on which state you live in. After that it is . . .
1. find a decent job(s) - - - Good luck in the current economy, especially for unskilled laborers.
2. Beg food and shelter from family and friends.
3. Crime. In general this equates to - - - Females=prostitution. Males=drugs
4. Jail for option #3, and hope that the government does a better job raising your kids/baby.
5. Get a disabling disease/injury and keep your luxurious $300 + food stamps each month.

They are a union, not a government program. Like big business, they haggle with employers for employee wages/benefits/hours/etc...
There ranks have been dwindling over the last 30+ years due to a combination of bad press and their own unreasonable demands/requests.

Historically, we have lived without unions before. The unfailing result is you work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, without benefits, without pension. But on the bright side --- your six year old son can work on the line right there next to you.

Ah, there it is. I didn't think you'd miss the chance to show you complete lack of understanding of the situation. Sure, there are people who take advantage of the system. I'd be very interested to see your plan for helping people who need help and weeding out those who don't...and doing it all on a small budget. By all means, if you can figure that out, please share. Until then, you need to realize that no matter what we do, there will be people taking advantage of the system. There are two options, either help poor people who genuinely deserve and need the help, and live with the people who then take advantage of that system or don't help anyone and let 10% of the population live in poverty and die of starvation or sicknesses that could have been cured. I'll go with option one.

Or........... We could open up soup kitchens and shelters for the starving homeless people. A hot and a cot is all we owe able bodied folks who won't work. Let me ask you a simple question..... Should folks on welfare have cable TV while many hard working tax payers who fund their laziness do without this service?

I agree.
In fact, I have been complaining about this very thing for years.
The system should be revamped and designed to actually help and encourage people to be off the system.
The system needs to stop punishing those who attempt to get off the system and instead provide the support that helps them wen themselves off.

Instead the system is set up in an ALL or NOTHING do or die program.
Either you get everything or you get nothing.
And with it being set up as such, most of the time it is better to get the all than the nothing.
Especially when the economy is in the toilet.

Now don't get me wrong.
Several states have started to move from the all or nothing setup.
But they all still got a goody long ways to go.

Discuss what you think the short and longterm effect of cutting this/these program(s) would have on the U.S. and/or your own non-U.S. country.

In Australia we have one, a tax rebated for people taking private health insurance, it will be on the news soon and a debate is looming because the government is thinking to discontinue it, what do you think of that? I thought that private enterprises are good to a country because they introduce competition and force the public health services to lift their game up; IMO this subsidy has an adverse effect on competition.
