In fact, it is impossible to define something that would be less adverse to competition. -- Except of course, just doing away with health care all together. That always does wonders for making a strong workforce. ![]() P.S. - Reverend Rick --- The U.S. holds approximately 600,000 -- 1,000,000 people that require shelter and food, etc... (2007-2008 statistics). A REALLY BIG majority of that is 1. mentally ill (thank you Reagan) 2. Single-parent families wherein the (almost invariably) mom can either get a job, OR raise the kids (childcare is not yet a uniform government program). 3. physically disabled. 4. Addicted to drugs, and without a government rehab program (thank you Reagan), or 5. Clean & sober, looking hard for a job, but being uneducated, and/or having a crappy personality, and/or having bad luck are jobless for the long-term. A very, VERY tiny portion of the homeless are con-men/women who are "milking the system". ![]() editted P.P.S. -- As to that VERY tiny portion...... Yeah. I too am for "hangin' 'em high." (not literally ), for those are the criminals who are preying upon the weakest and most destitute, in the time of their greatest need. Since it is that TINY MINORITY who make the tax-payers blindly believe that the homeless are livin' large, and lazy. Wouldn't you agree Reverend?"How do you argue with someone who states that the people who are sleeping on the streets of America 'are homeless by choice?' Define "able-bodied." Lots of people are disabled for mental health reasons.

I'm not sure that I've known anyone on welfare who has cable. Unless they're in a shelter that has it, in which case there's usually a fight over the remote between twenty people at a time, and it goes off at ten.

I'm on disability and I have basic cable (which is just the broadcast networks + Discovery channel), but only because it's a package deal with my internet, whic my father is kind enough to pay for me.

Disability isn't "welfare", really. I was thinking more of general relief programs.

Yeah, but I thought it was close enough to mention.
Still waiting for someone to define "able-bodied."

Well, it isn't to you and me. I'd bet it counts as the same thing to Rick, though.

![]() I don't have one problem with disabled people if they are truly disabled. I believe in more local charities and less in the federal government. I believe we can help folks better on a local level than we can on the federal level and have the ability to sift through the people who are in genuine need and those who are not. I want to help folks more not less. I believe the Federal Government is inefficient and wasteful. I believe some folks slip through the cracks and do not receive help when dealing with Washington bureaucrats.

Which brings us back to the question of how you define "able-bodied."
