I think it's generally true, but I don't agree with the specific example. Nothing worse is going to happen if we don't torture. In fact, the very fact that we torture is probably going to cause something worse, as extremists find their views being justified by our actions.

The (lack of) welfare of terrorists is why we have terrorists in the first place. It is my belief that if the Middle East were better off (and defeating theocracy is part of that) we'd have far, FAR fewer terrorists to worry about. Education and equality are our best weapons in the so-called War on Terror.

Liberals are too idealistic. Many seem to believe that if we leave Iraq, the Islamic theocrats will give up and become good democrats (refering to Democracy).

The thing is, Islamic theocrats had no hold on Iraq until we invaded and overthrew Saddam's government, which, for all its flaws, was secular.

As a liberal, I am opposed to the Iraq conflict because invasion was not merely unjustified, but STUPID. We weren't done in Afghanistan. We haven't crippled, much less destroyed, Al Qaeda. We haven't scored a meaningful victory in the War on Terror. We've just created more enemies, alienated our allies, and foolishly tied up our military resources in occupation of a country that posed no threat. Strategically as well as morally, Iraq was a mistake.

OF course, it's not as simple as just giving up and leaving. We've made a mess, now we're honor-bound to stay until it's cleaned up.

Can you cite even one reference to a liberal making such a claim? Either on RF or in the media would be fine.
