It is not so much atheism as it secularism. It started with anticlerical reading of seperation of church and state by the majority of Protestants. It soon evolved into “separation of religion and state" by secularists.
Little did the forefathers know that this would launch into taking away church support on a state level. Though the First Amendment guaranteed religious freedom and prohibited the federal establishment of any church, the states were free under the Constitution to have officially supported churches. Most states had established churches with ministers receiving state salaries. How times have changed.
