Yay for news links expiring. I'll look around for other sources.
But yeah, there have been cases of gays not getting federal jobs even though they're qualified and sometimes the best choice. It's not under Don't Ask Don't Tell but when someone finds out you're gay and you're fired the next for some excuse of a reason.. eh, it can't possibly be homophobia...
In searching for that source I've found some that suggest that they've cut back on this quite a bit, which is an
awesome thing.

I got out of the military a few years ago and as for how it was when I was in, it didn't seem like that big of a problem. Really, the only way one would seriously be discharged for homosexuality is if they made it so open that they were declaring it pretty much everywhere and it caught up with them or they had a superior who was a jackass. I knew some gays in the military and it was quite obvious they were gay but no one made a deal of it. It's kind of like the sex law in the UCMJ that prohibits anything else other than missionary position. You see, that is the real problem there. There is no law in the UCMJ against homosexuals...but against any sexual postion other than missionary, and since homosexuals don't have sex in that position then that is where the legality falls. It's a ridiculous law anyway...who the heck is going to know unless you tape it or make it public? That's the rub with homosexuality...you are homosexual they KNOW you break that law.

I think it depends on the unit or what have you. I have a gay friend in the military who is terrifed of his superiours finding out and then I've met (straight) people who say in their cases they don't think it would be a problem
