Gene McCarthy: RIP (America, Lord)

Eugene McCarthy, former Minnesota senator and U.S. presidential candidate, died Saturday at age 89.

McCarthy is best remembered as an opponent of the Vietnam War, but made incisive comments on American politics for many decades.

In 2003, he compared the Bush administration to the characters from The Lord of the Flies. I can't remember when or where he noted that he was the last politician to run for president of the U.S. who had only been born once.

What a great guy... he came to a rally down here in Orlando in the early, early seventies (or was it late sixties???). I never got to meet him. I never followed his politics much, but always felt a certain affinity towards him and his opposition of the War. We need a few more McCarthys today.

If he was only born once, then we all know where he is now.

Sounds like he was a decent guy; I thought that was an anachronism in the States (or anywhere else in our delightful world) Politician/Honest guy ?????
