If the Patriot Act is such a good thing for this nation, then why despite the cheerleading of President George Bush, are conservatives and liberals lining up against this hideous law?
Nonetheless, Congress is on the verge of reauthorizing this liberity -gutting law. That is unless, a looming filibuster in the Senate next week derails it. The Patriot Act was hastily enacted by Congress with the urging of Bush in the days after 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S., that claimed nearly 3,000 lives. It became a major component in the battle to stop terrorism. What it did was allow goverment, particularly law enforcement expanded powers to intrude into the lives of all Americans. It provides for expanded and easier to obtain wire taps, searching of files, including medical and libary, to obtain personal data on people. In effect, it played to goverment's desire to be "big brother". One revised form or compromise purposed would provide a four-year extension of the goverment's ability to conduct roving wiretaps; extend for four years the goverment's power to wiretap "lone wolf" terrorist, which applies to al criminal cases; and give the goverment 30 days to provide notice it has carried out a search warrant. When the Patriot Act was passed four years ago only one senator- Larry Feingold, D-Wisc. - voted against it. That will not be the case in its present form. Three Republican and three Democrate senators have issued a statement calling for additional revisons to the Patriot Act that would give law enforcement "the tools they need while providing safeguards to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans". I believe that legislation is needed to continue to battle and win against terrorism. However, if it whittles away our liberities, we will have succcumbed to terrorism, whose main aim is to destroy our system of governing. Your thoughts on this subject, please. Trash it and make something that doesn't deny everyone their rights and make too much of a mockery of our founding fathers.

Calling it the "Patriot Act" is misleading. It should be called the Haliburton Slush Fund Act. Go figure. Any politician with ANY sense will reverse this legislation and restore our nation to sanity. Well, that would necessitate an impeachment as well, but I am all for that too!

Now that it has actually been read I imagine it will be scrapped. For my American friends who cherish liberty and democracy I hope this is the case.

while some of the things in the patriot act are for the better, the majority of it seem to limit the freedoms and liberties of the individual. i say vote it down, the entire thing. while i dont like the idea of another terrorist attack, this legislation will not protect us, and actually does more harm than good. it is the policy of this administration to hold an U.S. citizen, suspected of terrorist involvement, for 3 years without being charged of with crime, and when they finally do charge him, it is for something completely different than what he was being held for. this, and many other things supported by the executative branch,is absolutely ludicrous, and should be abolished.

I hope it dies from the fillibusters. I've actually had my phone line tapped a few times because of it. I can remember one time, my brother was arrested, I don't remember what for, I think it might have been drugs, when we would go to bail him out, the cops would have transported him, and somehow they knew what we thought of them. One cop even said "Well, I know you hate me, and you think I'm stupid, arrogant, and worthless..." which is exactly what my mom was saying to my brothers girlfriend over the phone. Sure enough, when my brother called from wherever he was, giving the city name as his name for the collect call, we rejected the call, and was finally able to bail him out. They obviously didn't think he was a terrorist, the cops just wanted to be dicks about it.
