I'd rather not die myself.

Then you'd better be damn sure you AND your loved ones take your meds before going to the airport. The wrecklessness that is shown by this incident affects all of us.

Yes, it means that we are safer than I thought we were. These guys (air marshals) are actually out there, ready to save the day. I'm very thankful. Ryan is right on the money. Leaves nothing to add.

I have the opposite view. Shooting someone in the airport is absolute madess. I would feel safer if I knew that the Air Marshalls would at least show enough concern for "innocents" that they had non-lethal weapons that are easier to use than pistols that require multiple discharges. Shooting a mental guy multiple times in a public place does not impress me. That person could have been you or me or anyone else in our family.

At the time it was more likely that he had a bomb and was going to kill you or me or anyone else in our family - along with many others.

So what is your proof that these are actually easier to use and have the range of a pistol and are as accurate as a pistol... I am pretty sure the only thing you can possibly be talking about would be a taser, and those have a very limited range (21 feet for police officers) Normally an Air Marshal would not be RIGHT next to the person they need to take down... And planes do normally reach longer than 21 feet...

I'd have more of a problem with the wife of the man who got shot than with the police officers... In no way should he have been off of his medicine when he is going to be on an airplane... That is just common sense....

Yeah, they should have set phasers to stun.

Seriously though, it is easy to second guess their actions, but when out in the situation, it is important to realize that their are hundreds of innocent women and children around, and it is their job to protect thos people from harm. Given the situation as I understand it, I do not see that they had a choice. I did read that they were tryign to shoot to put down and wound, and not to kill. But because of the light loads that air mashalls use in their pistols (in order to prevent in flight damage if they are used, ammunition is given a lesser amount of gun powder in each brass) multiple shots were needed. The man just would not surrender, go to the ground and give up his bag. Again, very, very sad for him, his family, and the air marshalls who now realize they killed an innocent man.

Certainly non-lethal preparations would be a strong policy tatic but unfortunately at the time of the incident the non-leathal option was not afford to the marshalls with the tools they had that day. I would hope as you suggest that other options are now explored and non-lethal prepartions are incorporated into the flight marshall program to give marshalls more lattitude than those two had that day.

I was thinking the same thing. I hope there is a post interview by authorities with her to look for a common theme or thread as to why she didn't take any pre-cautions for his condition because I fear that what you have stated as "common sense" may make sense but not guarantee practice.

The senerio has the opportunity to be put to good use as the likleyhood of another mentally unstable person flying without meds is high and tatically speaking I feel that prepartions and training could only yield postitive results.
