Remember the old saying rich man's war, poor man's fight? I keep hearing on conservative talk radio programs that is not the case of the war in Iraq.
Today I heard the following. I was driving at the time and did not take notes, but the satistics went something like this..... Those joining the military today are more likely to come from rural upper income areas than poorer inner-city areas by 3 to 2 within recruits 18 to 24 years old. They tend to be better educated than their counter-parts, in general, who are not in the military. The idea seemed to be that most of our young men and women are joining the military since 9/11 mostly because of patriotism and not because they need the money. Also that we as a nation, are not sending mostly our poor to fight this war. Satistics can be slanted of course. My question is; are the above satistics true for those who are in Iraq or are they only true for those who are joining the military in general. If that was addressed on the program I must have missed it. What do you think? Do you have facts to back-up your opinions? |

I'm going to have to vote "Don't know" on this one. I haven't seen any statistics on who is being recruited and who isn't. If I had a hunch, though, my guess would be that the upper class in this country is NOT lining up to get into the military.

If so, I too have a hunch that you are correct. But what we are talking about here, I think, is more middle class vs. the poor. But like you, I too voted "Don't know" because... I don't. But I sure would love to find out. |

Yes, I had in mind the class that Bush's daughters are members of when I said upper class. I think the last war in which the upper class in America was well represented in the armed forces must have been WWII.

Nope. It's the fight of everyone who loves freedom and security for America.

Many of the people I know that have joined the fight went to get money for college or escape from a poor life style. My daughter is seriously thinking about going to ge money for college and get away from her mother. I wish I could do that.

It's not a rich mans war...It may have been started as such but now those who are inlisting are just proud americans from all but the highest classes in the US. They did raise the standards a while back that you have to be a high school grad or equivilent. If there are any enlistee's from the highest classes in this country you can bet they are in officers candidate schools and will be making the top dollar upon graduation in their chosen fields. Those in our country who choose to enlist sure aren't doing it for the money. Most who are over there are those who believe in the fight for freedom and for our freedom from terror. They are proud and we are proud of them....their walk in life proir means nothing...they are willing to lay down their life for our safety...There is little we can do to repay their sacrifice except to cheer their return to their families and cry with the families who lose a dad...a mom... a brother...sister...aunt...uncle...etc. It's really hard to be the one left to wait and every day that unexpected knock...or the phone ringing in the night...it's terrifying what they all go through so you and I can sit here and debate it all.
