This is the danger of organizations that are there to 'protect the citizen'. As a parallel, take Greenpeace; they have, on many occasions, comitted criminal acts when trying to defend some cause.

The trouble is that when one becomes obsessed with looking for dirt, and trying to clean it out, Some of the dirst might well be 'good dirt'; ie there to protect you and me, but possibly in manner we would rather not know about.

That people have a duty to endorse laws that are to the benefit of all citizens, even when it might limit their own freedom or be a cost to themselves.(the greater good).
This is another example of where Duty comes before Rights.

The ACLU has great intentions. They spend millions of dollars protecting civil liberties. But like Greenpeace and PETA, they have an anti-libertarian, anti-capitalist agenda and they use their massive resources for some pretty ridiculous causes. Dennis Miller put it this way, "As for what many are calling racial profiling in the aftermath of September 11th, well, get ready to be ****** off, you ACLU-Morons, we're dealing with a massive threat and limited manpower, so, you want them to check everybody out equally? Sure, fine okay, but let's at least compromise and put the Swedish dwarf a little further down the list than the Iraqi explosives expert carrying a Belgian passport with more eraser marks on it than Kid Rock's trig final."

They just take things too far. They've lost common sense all together.

There's a balance to be struck between our duty to others and our own rights. I think the Libertarians tend to strike that balance far towards our own rights, while Liberals tend to strike it more towards our duty to others. But very few people in America would go as far as Europe in striking the balance so far towards our duty to others.

I think the difference is, that libertarians believe that our duties should remain free, such that they are not enforced through government, but through goodwill. I know that I believe deeply in duty and compassion, but I do not believe that these are legitimate enterprises of government.
