Default Bush Tried Again

Quote:

In a major policy speech, Mr Bush refused to set an "artificial deadline" to withdraw US troops, saying it was "not a plan for victory".

It comes after the release of the first Iraq strategy document, which rejects widespread calls for a timetable.

Mr Bush has come under growing pressure from Democrats on Iraq. Polls give him the lowest approval of his presidency.

They also suggest that six out of 10 Americans think the war in Iraq is not worth the cost.

As such, this was a speech from a president in deep trouble, says the BBC's Justin Webb in Washington. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said Mr Bush's speech was "recycled... tired rhetoric", and that the president had "once again missed an opportunity to lay out a real strategy for success in Iraq that will bring our troops safely home".

I thought Bush's speech yesterday was better than usual. Better written. Or I guess, written to Bush's level of ability to deliver it. *shrugs* After the speech, I gave it some thought and I think the President is absolutely right; but, I want to get weekly updates from the President on how the Iraqi Army is coming along. Are they close to being ready? Are they making progress? How is their government coming along? Are they heading toward freedom and democracy? Keep the information coming.

I think my biggest problem with Bush, is that unlike Presidents Reagan and Clinton, Bush seems to be uncomfortable talking to the American people; and I don't think it's just that he's uncomfortable talking. I think the President needs to give one of these speeches every week. Telling the people the good and the bad. Telling the people that progressive is being made. I mean, the bash-America-Democrats are out there every day talking about how the war is a failure, how America is a failure, how America is evil and how the terrorists are really pretty good guys. The President needs to counter that with optimism and enthusiasm. He needs to stand up for what he is doing.
