This week, the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal group based in Scottsdale, Ariz., announced that its 800 cooperating attorneys have volunteered to handle without fee complaints about "improper attempts to censor the celebration of Christmas in schools and on public property."

In 2004, the second year of its "Christmas Project," affiliated attorneys sent a detailed memo on ADF's view of Christmas and constitutional law to 7,000 school districts. The 2005 effort, already under way, adds city officials.

A similar information campaign is being waged by Liberty Counsel, another Christian legal group based in Orlando, Fla., and the Christian Educators Association International, representing 8,000 public school teachers.

The topic also is the subject of a polemic by the Fox News Channel's John Gibson that is selling briskly: "The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought."
Is Christmas not a secular holiday - celebrated for reasons other than Christian. Is not America in the business of providing freedom for all religions? Why is it that so many try to usurp other traditions.

No, in my opinion it is not a secular holiday even though its true meaning has been distorted by materalism and greed for years now. Many feel that any govermental endorsement of Christmas observances is a violation of their rights.

I would rather have Christmas observations banned when goverment endorsed than to see it as a non-religious holiday.

this fighting about christmas is stupid...lets be honest how much of christmas really is about jesus?
it's a fun and festive holiday where people act a little nicer to each other, just let it be i say.

just as a side note...the first night of chanukah is on christmas day

I'd rather just call them winter holidays and be done with it... after all, when we get a break from school/work, it's rarely just for one day. Instead of having just Christmas in schools, you could have education on winter holiday traditions throughout the world.

I think Christmas has split into two holidays. First, is the traditional celebration of Christ's birth, and second is a newer holiday, a sort of secular potlatch. Both are called Christmas, but they don't seem to have much in common.

Celebrate Yule! All the wonderful traditions without all the "religion". Just celebrate with your friends and families, decorate a tree, eat a big meal and remember to do lots of laughing and smiling and all will be well. All this PC anti-religion/anti-Christian nonsense just really drags the holiday season to the pits.

Well, I see it differently, of course, although it has to be a 'private thing' with me, because no one else in the family want to see the religious side. We are a small family (four of us in this house, and Marie's Mum and Aunt).

Having said that, whenever the three women get together........well, the word 'fireworks' comes to mind
