I absolutely agree that in the US and UK and everywhere else, these multi-millionaires who are getting paid to kick a ball around should be taxed big time...sure, it takes talent, but I hardly consider football important to a society (though I think those of you in England may disagree
![]() On the one hand, some people need to be paying more: if 100% of my salary will be taxed for social security, someone making $1,000,000 a year should also have 100% of his salary taxed for SS. On the other hand, people need to make better decisions. There are a lot of people out there who could be supporting themselves better...saving for retirement...getting more of an education...but would rather buy a big screen TV (clearly I'm not talking about the poorest of the poor).

Many can't afford the debt for a big TV. Amongst any social grouping, you'll always find exceptions to the norm, cheaters, frauds and the like. But I'm concerned with the majority who are struggling on honestly against a system which doesn't really care. You know how much hassle you get when you make a claim ? it's akin to a gestapo interogation. What is needed is an improvement in basic wages. For an adult, the UK gov says £4.62, the EU says it should be £7+, so someone's got if badly wrong.
Give people jobs and decent pay, otherwise poverty is a timebomb that one day will explode. Cheers K |

The first solutions to poverty is education and science. We need power innovations in industry in order to produce new capital and create new jobs. Right now, we are undervaluing education and science. The second solution, is hard work and individual responsibility. Too many poeple depend on the government to take care of them.

Personally, I think the whole subject of wealth and what we think society requires of us has 'gone out of control.'I don't know about the States - I can only talk about personal experience. My older son spent last week end with us (and he brought his girl friend - we just shrug our shoulders and accept that sharoing a room and a bed is 'normal' for them-although we don't approve).
His girl friend was telling us how they can't afford meat or fish in their diet - but I know full well that they each paid over £100 to go to a week end pop festival in Reading recently, and they think nothing of using Taxis, going out for a" good "night out.................... He Had to have a Midi keyboard for his computer (to write music that he can't sell, but he is quite happy to record and give to others). I don't understand; both he and his brother were brought up with the same values - and both are like Chalk and Cheese - as far as money is concerned. The younger one may be a bit over zealous about making money but at least he is self sufficient - AND as a Uni student (Though we do want to help him) What are regarded now as necessities are what my wife and I used to call luxuries.

For sure, peoples perceptions have changed, everybody is led by the Media to something they are not, and the Gov which wants everybody to spend more more and pay more VAT whilst doing so. Today, you musy have this, you must have that blah blah
The debt mountain in the UK is massive, averaged our, each individual owes the Banks and Mortgage lenders over £1000. If people on good wages can manage to get into serious debt, how bad is it for the poor, who have to get in debt for the basics. If everybody was to default on debt repayments, Western culture and society would collpase overnight. Cheers K |
