Because the place is a great bloody mess and you can't just bugger off and leave them now and expect 'democracy' to mean anything other than the group with the most ordinance wins?
Because someone has to protect the foreign engineers, medical workers, etc. who are trying to put the place back together again and keep getting kidnapped and beheaded for their troubles? Because it was all an insidious plot by George Bush (well, God told him to do it, so I'm sure we can all work out the mastermind behind the plan) to take over the country to steal all their oil and gain a foothold in the Middle East, so now that they're there you wont pry them loose with an iron bar? Pick a reason. Don't like any of them; hell, make one up!

They have to protect their money making ventures (oil). If they pull out Iraq will descend into chaos and oil production will suffer. Money makes the world go round.

plus many administrations have talked about having a permenant presense in the Mid East, this is a perfect way of getting that.
