I don't understand it. There are plenty of intelligent people in the USA. Why does it constantly seem like the media is treating them like they are something less?

There are book series that are released all over the world but in the USA the title or length (shorter books) and wordings are changed to appeal to Americans.

Make sure you get the "foreign" edition if you want to read something written for a human being rather than a developmentally delayed terrier with a nervous disorder.

Not only that, but many of America's most respected academics have trouble getting speaking engagements inside the US. (Noam Chomsky being the most obvious example).

In December 2008, Time Magazine discontinued it's Canadian version.

During the second half of 2009 the magazine saw a 34.9% decline in news stand sales.[11] During the first half of 2010, there was another decline of at least one third in Time magazine sales. In the second half of 2010, Time magazine newsstand sales declined by about 12% to just over 79 thousand copies per week.

True, we get the watered down, pointless American version, which is why circulation is declining.

Time magazine is a rag. I wouldn't line a birdcage with it.

I subscribe to the Smithsonian, NatGeo, and Travel and Leisure myself. I probably SHOULD subscribe to Texas Monthly - it's a great magazine.

But hey, that's just me.

The discontinuation of the Canadian edition and the decline in sales had nothing to do with the issue raised by the OP, however. The issue here is why someone made an editorial decision to dumb down the cover for distribution in the US. It seems that the editors thought the international cover would not appeal to Americans as much as the personal interest story "Why Anxiety Is Good for You". Was it because the editions went to press at different times? Not likely, since one of the banners on the front page of the US edition was "EGYPT: REVOLUTION REIGNITED". I don't know why anyone would want to buy a news magazine that headlined a non-news fluff story over one of the most important news events of recent weeks. Are they trying to destroy their sales?
