I'm not a smoker.... Cigarette smoke ("2nd hand") actually makes my nose plug up and makes me start coughing. Allergies? I'm not so sure it's actually the tobacco that does it or some of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process, though, cause most home-rolled cigarettes, pipe or cigar smoke does not have that effect on me. Anyway, I also hate the stench it leaves on my clothes and in my hair. So yes, I do care if people smoke around me, but if I'm in a smoker's home or car, I figure it's their space and I'm a guest, so I'll often put up with it to be polite. What I really do appreciate is a couple of buddies I dive with who are smokers. I have a pretty small car and they have larger, more comfortable rigs, so usually we meet somewhere in town and they drive. It's an hour from Anchorage to the Whittier tunnel or it's 2 hours to Seward, which are the 2 places we usually go to dive. These folks know I don't smoke and without even asking, they don't smoke with me in their car! While waiting for the tunnel to open or if we make a pit stop, they'll get out of the car and light up. They also make an effort to stay downwind, or if they don't notice which way the smoke is blowing, won't get offended if I ask to swap places (like on a dive boat or something). For some reason, I just can't give 'em a hard time about their habbit. They know the health risks, but choose to smoke anyway. Nothing I say or do is going to make them quit, so why should I give them a hard time about it if they're making such an effort to keep me from being uncomfortable??
