Taxing cigarettes does not work. Canada tried it.

When cigarettes in Canada were $6.00-$7.00 a pack, people smuggled them in from the US, or stole them. Either way, the taxes were not collected and contempt for the law and the gov't. increased.

Agreed its the same here, in the UK, with people smuggling from France. Plus you can always just roll your own and save money that way.

I think smoking should be banned, and will never smoke myself and too be honest i despise people who do smoke in public enclosed spaces, but then i'm biased because i had to watch my father die from lung cancer.

Okay, looks like I am in the minority for all my votes...oh well. I am a smoker, learned from watching my father when I was 12. Went through all the education things...NO peer pressure...just saw my dad do it and because i wanted to be like him I guess, I started.

I do not believe that the taxes should be raised, not because it will make it harder for me per se, but it is true that the money will probably be used for whatever the specific state needs at the time whether it has anything to do with smoking or not. It won't stop people from getting them...people will find a way one way or another if they are that addicted.

I don't believe that smoking should be allowed in public places...YES...this from a smoker. I will not smoke in the presence of a non-smoker in public, in their cars, whereever unless they have outright stated that they don't care if I do. Just because I have the philosophy that I could get hit by a bus tomorrow so why not do what I like today and therefore don't care about the effects smoking may have on me...doesn't mean that others don't feel differently and don't want to be around it. I don't smoke around my mom because she has problems breathing around smoke...why not have that consideration for others?

Oh, and even with my being a smoker...even I don't like being in an enclosed space full of cigarette smoke. I would much rather have a cig outside or sitting by a window. I have no problem going outside of a public place to smoke...I even prefer it.
