I used to smoke very heavilly, and gave up totally in 1993. Now, when I go into a bar (I think you call them - a 'pub' to me), I often recoil, as does Marie, by the smell of smoke. I like to think that I am liberal minded, but I hate going somewhere where I will have the polution from cigarettes whether I like it or not. The smell clings for days, in our hair, in our clothes - it isn't nice (apart from being injurious). Yes, I voted for higher taxes - so that the money can be used a) to put kids off from starting (and I'm not sure there is any value in that), b) to be used by the health services to help deal with all the smoking-related diseases. ![]()

There should be a ban on birth, no one has survived it yet.

i think it should be banned in public places. maybe they could have smokehouses where smokers can stop and suck in some cancer with their friends. i do not think it should be taxed any higher than say alcohol or gasoline or trains.

I think smoking should be banned from public, enclosed places. There should be designated places to allow for smoking in public, open places, with means for safe disposal (and woe be unto anyone who litters!). I thought the smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants worked fine - don't understand the need for a complete ban. And honestly, I think the ban on smoking in bars is a bit looney. You can partake of one vice but not another? Plus, there's the issue of the rights of the owners to be able to run their businesses. Not against a sin tax but let's not get crazy. And I am somewhat concerned with the health risks of second-hand smoke but I don't lose sleep over it. I'm sure that there are things I voluntarily subject myself to that are far worse. LA smog, cell phones, microwaving plastic containers, indoor mold, lead in my drinking water, fastfood...

People should not be able to smoke in the presence of any other person who is not consciously choosing to be exposed to it. A mother who smokes with her kids in the car or in their presence in general should be arrested for child abuse.
Just my opinion. My typical opinion on things is if it doesn't bother anyone else, it should be legal. Clearly smoking hurts other people when smokers are too inconsiderate to realize that other people have to breathe the same air. It's not about vice. It's about consideration.

I used to be a smoker. Quitting was very difficult, but it was worth it. I am much happier off of nicotine than I ever was on it. I do get a little upset still at people who make a big deal about being around smokers. Smokers in this country are treated unfairly in my opinion. It is a very serious addiction and quitting is not an easy thing. I don't think people should be yelled at and treated poorly because if their addiction. If someone is addicted to illegal narcotic, many take pity on them and try to help, but make it legal (like cigarattes) and suddenly you are the scum of humanity. Its pretty sad sometimes.
