There has been some discussion on this board before about the issue of the U.S. "rendering" people to other nations for torture, the White house denies it does it for torture, yet others say it is happening for that purpose. To me, there is no doubt they are when considering the history of the CIA and the U.S. involvement in other countries but others may have different views. This is by no means the only sources of information but I found the comparisons interesting. Personally, I think the statement in the CNN report, "This program of renditions is fully authorized, so the CIA is not doing anything illegal that has not been authorized by the president," speaks volumes.

I find this outrageous and, frankly, horrific. What is our country coming to?
I agree that terrorism is something that must be dealt with, but that is no excuse for over-zealousness and for stomping all over the freedoms and equality for which the U.S. is supposed to stand.

Saw a report about it last night on 60 minutes, where two men in Sweden I believe, were taken into custody by the local police, transported to the airport, and given to US authorities. It turned out that they were innocent and not connected to terrorism in any way. Pretty sad what happened to them, but I am not sure that is grounds to terminate the practice. I know that sounds incredibly cruel, and my apologies to any that are offended, but sometimes bad things happen in war, even when you are trying your best to do the right thing, i.e. friendly dire. It is just a fact of life, and has been since the beginning of time. When you are trying to do the right thing, sometimes bad things happen in the process.

Friendly fire isn't. War gives no excuse for authorizing inhumane torture (not that there's humane torture to begin with...).

EEWRED-- Don't you see, though? This is precisely what our country is supposed to be against....assuming people are guilty until proven innocent, kidnapping suspects, torturing them, holding them without any sort of trial for months at a time, sending them to countries like Uzbekistan where medieval methods of torture (like boiling water) are common....it's just unconscionable. It would be preferable to accept the possibility of being the victims of another terrorist attack than to perpetrate this clandestine terrorism of our own.
Our founding fathers are probably spinning in their graves right now.... "Any people that would give up liberty for a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety." ~Benjamen Franklin

I don't know if there is really a reason for torture anymore. The whole point of it is to get something out of someone. Now, I believe they have drugs that make your brain slip, and basically makes the interrogators get anything they want out of you. I would rather have them do that then beat someone senseless. Anyone else heard of these drugs that make you defenseless to interrogation, and what do you think about them?
