Bill Would Hold Game Makers Accountable For Players' Actions

Where are the parents? Why should the makers of the games be punished for the parent's negligence? It makes me angry when people immediately and wildly point fingers at everyone but the parties responsible, the parents and the child playing the game. I've played plenty of violent games in my time, I <3 Half-Life and it's mods and countless PS2 games, but for some reason I'm still able to seperate fact from fiction. I'm also 17 years old. I've yet to grab a flamethrower and blow up people, I abhor guns and most violence, but when it's fake I'm fine with it, because it is fake. I'm in complete agreement with this. Quote:

I completely agree. I too am a minor and play counter-strike, half-life and day of defeat. Many of my friends play these games too but most of us don't even own a gun more dangerous than a paintball marker. If the person playing the game is not mature enough to understand the difference between the game and reality, he/she has no business playing it and its the parenst job to enforce it.
Thanks for bringing up such a great subject

The thing I don't understand is what is so wrong with these kids that they are unable to differentiate fact from fiction?
At 5 years old, I was playing violent video games with my older brothers and watching extremely violent horror movies, but guess what I knew then as I did when I was a teenager, as I do now that it's wrong to hurt other people and the stuff I played or saw wasn't real. It's always "blame the parents, blame the makers." What about blaming the kids? If a child is unable to differentiate between what's real and what's not and what's right and wrong, then there's something wrong with the child not the parents and not the makers of these games. I'm sorry if I'm being blunt and I sound rude, but that's the way I feel. I'm a parent (as most of you know) of a 6 year old boy, he plays violent video games (albeit, not excruciatingly violent games...I don't buy him games that were meant for adults) but that's not because I'm worried he's going to turn out bad, it's because I'm worried they will give him nightmares...there's a difference. He also watches horror movies and other violent-esque movies..his favorite movie: Kill Bill. He loves them, but guess what he knows that it's not real and he knows the stuff he sees or plays is wrong. And he's only six. If my six year old can figure that stuff out, then how come a teenager can't? It's the same thing that happend with all the school shootings: Let's blame the artists of the music they listened to. WHY? Blame the damn kids! They were the ones with enough lucidity to get the guns, go to school and shoot it up, they knew what they were doing, so why blame anyone else other than the kids themselves? |
