It is nice. Is Salt a metaphor for faith? I like the implied mystery of "Did Paula kiss for love?"

What an intriguing question! I think it could be. This poem, even more than most of my poems, arrived the imagery bubbling up from my subconcious. So, I can't say that salt is consciously intended as a metaphor for faith, but your comment sure does seem to me to point out something there.

I like the implied mystery of "Did Paula kiss for love?"

Me too. This is one of my personal favorite poems, and that's in large part because Paula was in many ways a mystery to me, and I think the poem reflects something of the mysteries of her.

For instance, she loved it when I would read aloud to her from a book about whales. But why? Why whales? And why aloud? She couldn't say. So, I would just read.
