I've forgotten who said it. The saying is approximately:
Two old wise men were having a good time together debating A student approaches them and one of them says "Here comes a fool, now we must be serious" I really love it, and I read so much I have no idea where I found it. It could be in any time period in philosophy. I'm thinking that it could be in Plato or Xenophon (in which case I suspect it would be a quote from a poet), but I'm not sure.

Dopp, I believe that Dr. Clarke was alluding to my unknown source, comparing Beau with a character in a Greek story...

Well you may have found it, dopp, but I could have sworn that I read it in my research.

James Boswell also says it was Clarke. I found numerous references to Clarke for this line, but nobody attributing it to an ancient Greek.

Yeah - I have no doubt that Clarke said it.
