I once knew why a moth is attracted to the light but, somehow, I forgot. No one told me I would forget... Why didn't they tell me? You'd think that would be an important thing, wouldn't you?
My son is not yet a year old. He fumbles with the words to things and has to point to show me what he is talking about. It takes time but I'm learning. It's like we have our own language. He loves to talk when we are out. We have conversations that no one else understands. Really, when you think about it, why wouldn't a moth be attracted to a light? It makes some sense, you know? It's as if the light is... He is innocent, my son. Completely unaware of how the world really works. He thinks that food magically forms in the refrigerator and the washing machine makes clothes. But why would he think different? The sun is setting so I turn the outside light on. From the darkness they come to my porch and flutter around the light. It must be blinding and it must be comforting in some way. My son sits next to me on the bench and we both watch them swarm around the lamp. He's quiet, he's trying to figure it out too I think. Why are they attracted to the light? Last edited by Super Universe; 12-01-2007 at 08:31 PM. |

Light is a matrix in the darkness. Your son is developing patterns from the matrix of personal experience.

We're attracted to the light because it is beautiful, and it erases darkness.
Actually, I was thinking about putting on an armor of light, because that is part of the liturgy for tomorrow. Today at my house and everywhere else we were literally putting on our armor of light...on the house, the trees, the eves, the stairways. Why do we put up lights at Christmas? To dispell the dark, and a symbol of the coming of Christ.

I've always assumed that moths are attracted to light to help them crawl out of a dark, enclosing space. They react to the light as if it meant "outside in daylight".
