It would be a misguided stereotype to employ. These guys are seaching for mathematical models that predict or approximate learning. They are fully aware their subject is subjective and acknowledge consciousness. They work in the behaviourist tradition of attempting to "determine" learning. But their research is much more exciting and open ended than that.

Not in terms of what is available to consciousness. I would say that the language of associations is based on associative strength which in turn is measured on its ability to influence future associations.

Not really. That would be natural language. I am more interested in the currency of generation of natural language. I think traditional conditioning terminology can be used for discussion of storage in the brain. There is a conceptual gap/leap between this and the generation of natural language which rests at the nexus of the conscious and unconscious mind.
