I forgot which philosopher argued which side but it's a very interesting topic.
I for one think you are a product of your environment to some extent and born with knowledge to another.

I look at "born with knowledge" as IQ.... and "taught knowledge" as education and wisdom. We are born with a certain capacity to learn, which, if we are born with MORE potential than others, could allow us to learn things much earlier than normal people... making it APPEAR that we were "born with knowledge". And then, we are also a product of our environments. Within this environment our experiences shape our knowledge...our experiences give us wisdom, as does our education.
As far as people just being "born knowing things"? Well, this does not fit into my own personal belief system.... but I also recognize that my beliefs may be incorrect, so.... who knows?

I think of it as being:
You're born with the capability to understand. What you know, has been taught to you. |

Didn't Plato, or was it socrates talk about the theory of recollection? And how before we are botn, we exist in the realm of the forms where we know everything. And during life, we never learn anything new, we just remember what we've already known. And how we are capable of recollecting anything if we are asked the right questions.
I always believed that we learn things, but the theory of recollection is appealing to me for some reason that is unbeknownst to me. However, I too believe what runt has already said. I just thought I would add that theory.

Ooh, fun theory! But why are some people less able to "remember"?

They were just not being asked the right questions. hehe... so next time you fail a test, go up to your teacher and say...
"according to socrates' theory of recollection, I should of aced this test, but you failed to ask me the right questions." I don't think it will work very well at getting you a better grade, but fun to do anyway. HEHE!!

I think that like any animal we have certain inborn instincts... language for one, is proving to be as much inborn as taught.
We have an instinct to want to convey info verbally... its the nuances of language that we have to learn. For instance, all babys babble the same no matter what language group they are born into. That babble is actually the basic sylables of every language... ah, eh, i, ga, ka et. cet... They just have to learn how to string them together. Personally I think that knowledge is a combination of environment and instinct. We were born to learn certen things that make us human. Culture seems to determine what those things will be. wa:-do |

I find myself agreeing with DarkOne and Painted Wolf. The way we are born, unless there is some malformation of the brain, we have the capacity to learn and to think. No knowledge is inborn.

I find it interesting that many religions have the same philosophies and many mythologies, have the same concepts and symbols. For instance the Aztecs and Egyptians built pyramids, they had sun gods. Many mythologies had resurrection themes. There is something inborn in humans that enables them to have common symbols. We have archetypes, wisdom and abilities inborn in us. I agree that it is a matter of recollecting them.

God created us to be. we are taught right from wrong. we all have some similar and some different gifts from God. this makes us dependent on one another. by sharing our gifts we act out of love. God is Love. every one is a role model.
