A few weeks ago, maybe a little more than that, I made a thread about how to not suffer, and that was basically saying, "If you can't do anything about it, worrying will do nothing so stop worrying. If you can do something about it, then there's nothing to worry about."
But it also excluded negative emotions as the ones bringing us down, our weaknesses. What I've recently came to discover is that all emotion creates a weakness, including love. Happiness is probably the only emotion that doesn't dictate us, at least I haven't found a way in which it does yet. This is not implying to be Nihilistic, although it kinda brings one to the neutralist viewpoint that a true Nihilist has. Hate nothing, love nothing, care for nothing. Interest and focusing on something else will make us swerve off the side of the road. It's like texting and driving; Life is the road, living is driving, and texting is the emotions. I'm not saying take things negatively, because I'm obviously against that too. I'm saying don't take things for anything more than what they are, don't add any form of relationship with it, negative OR positive, because it will create a weak spot, and life is always throwing rocks at you, once it hits that weak spot, you're in pain!

what's wrong with being vulnerable and being weak and being in pain? pain is bad, but running away from pain is running away from life. yeah emotion dictates us, but that's a wonderful thing... |

It is not possible to become emotionless. The suffering exists to make us stronger and wiser. Embrace the difficulties of life and see them as temporary and illusory. And embrace the happiness but also see that as temporary and illusory. The best approach, imo, is to go with the flow of life but to remain detached. But detachment is not the same as indifference.
I'm going to get all Hindu on you now. Hinduism emphasises detachment. It's the only way to not get too caught up in the illusions of this world which cause misery. As it is written: "Life is a bridge, enjoy while crossing but don't build a castle on it." In other words, experience it to its fullest, but don't let it control you.

I always thought everyone was always so focused on getting out of suffering.

Love will make you suffer, because once you lose who you love you will suffer.

and if one does not experience happiness, one isn't living either. seems to me the one who chooses to avoid these things are living in fear... fear robs one of life. risking is living. |

Sure they may call it a different thing, they may say the point of these philosophies are to become enlightened, but really what's the difference between being enlightened and lacking suffering?

That can pretty much be asked to all people who search for answers to philosophical questions.
What's the meaning of life? ..... What will you do when you find that out? Does God exist? ..... What will you do when you find that out? Why is the universe here? ..... What will you do when you find that out? etc etc
