I was in the bookstore the other day, and I noticed that Silver Ravenwolf had a new book out (I frequent that section in all bookstores), so I decided to skim through it. Apparently Silver's new book is about understanding magic in the scientific realm, mainly that of quantum physics. Now, I'm really bad with science, really bad. But, there's no indication that she has ever seriously studied anything having to do with science, so I'm not so sure she's qualified to be writing this book. But I digress...
Do you think that it's a good or bad idea to relate magic with science? Do you think the realm of quantum physics is an appropriate one to explore? Does magic need/have a scientific explanation?

not to be insulting---or to impose in a forum i shouldnt, but i have noticed that in the realm of quantum physics---that anyone that watches "what the bleep do you kno" automatically becomes an expert in the field of quantum physics...
however, when i read studies by REAL scientists---it seems Quantum Physics, and the metaphysical CRAP that "bleep" is all about are rarely comparative or related |

For Silver to use Quantum Physics though I think is very irresponsible. Her target audience are teenagers, early teenagers. They're not going to understand what the word Quantum means, let alone the theories behind it. It seems to me that she's trying to make herself look smart to her audience in hopes that they'll buy more of her books. But I hope that's not the case. But magic and science? To me, that's like asking 'can religion be explained scientifically?' and I would say that the answer is no. There are too many variables right now that we can't isolate just one in order to properly study it. Maybe that will change in the future, I kinda hope not, though.

From what I've read about Silver Ravenwolf, (by other pagans and Wiccans), I would caution against taking anything she says seriously.

This sounds like a book I would get a kick out of reading. I've taken several quantum mechanics courses and I consider QM a hobby (see my icon). I would love to hear a magical interpretation. Who is this Silver woman and what's the name of her book?

Perhaps he's not talking about magic as sleight-of-hand or parlor games, but as the term that must come to mind when physics describes the Universe as it actually operates.

Yeah, I thought that was understood too. But then, whenever someone says magic, I don't think of stage illusions anyway
