Almost everywhere I've worked. I've never had a job where I didn't have someone above me who was less qualified for their job than me or most of my co-workers.

I know people who are poor. I know people who were poor, but became well off. It boils down to talent & drive, with a sprinkling of luck. Of the people I know who are currently poor, some are dumb, some have mental problems, some make wasteful decisions, some are lazy, & a few are poor by choice, ie, living simply. Of the formerly poor I know, they are smart & worked to get where they are. Not everyone can be successful, but upward mobility is all about opportunity for those with talent & drive.

I was lucky enough to get a position I needed a while ago, I met a guy I know who inherited a fortune at a party and when I told him about my good luck he said the same thing as you 'we make our own luck' - I don't believe it. Too many wonderful people have no luck at all.

I'm sure there will be a few, but not the majority. I've worked my way up a few different places, and my employees liked and respected me. While there might have been one or two that thought they could do a better job, that wasn't a majority opinion. Also, I did good work, but the reason I was able to move up was connections more than anything else.

I'm curious about what companies & what line of work. I wonder just cuz in all the places I've worked as an engineer, eg, Black & Decker, Northrup
GM Truck & Bus, etc, etc, I've found the higher-ups to be qualified. The underlings always seemed to belong where they are, but you could tell when
someone's star was rising. Occasionally, I thought the wrong person had a job, but by & large, promotions were warranted.

You're probably not the only one here who is under that faulty assumption.

Everyone focuses on what made a person rich. How about taking a look at the poor choices people make and why they have nothing.

That's fine. Along with that why don't we look at the poor people who haven't made poor choices and yet still have nothing.

Why would a person feel entitled to the same rewards even though they made bad choices in their lives?

My experiences are similar, with the addendum of the Peter Principle. Too many folks show competencies that get them promoted to a level where they are no longer employing their competencies, and just really suck at their new position. They generally aren't all that happy there, either.

Various ones. Some retail jobs, restaurant jobs, a job at a comic book distributor, at a hospital, a pest control company, some others.

Considering the fact that my parents lost everything they had in the Carter recession... my mother lost her house in the Clinton recession, my brother lost his job as a long-haul trucker when the gas prices skyrocketed and none of us are exactly thriving now... Both of my parents, in their late 70's, are working because they have to, my father as much as 70hours in a week.

I find "making your own luck" a bit of a joke.

I find this one to be more truthful: "you need money to make money"

You don't already have money... you ain't gonna' make any more of it.
