With the White House zeroing in on the insurance-industry practice of discriminating against clients based on pre-existing conditions, administration allies are calling attention to how broadly insurers interpret the term to maximize profits.

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.

Under the cold logic of the insurance industry, it makes perfect sense: If you are in a marriage with someone who has beaten you in the past, you're more likely to get beaten again than the average person and are therefore more expensive to insure.

Another challenge uninsured pregnant women face is the notion from many insurance plans that pregnancy is a pre-existing condition. Medicaid, a federal funded program for low income persons, will accept women who are already pregnant. However, if you are not eligible to receive Medicaid it can still be a challenge to pay for all the prenatal visits and delivery. The estimated cost of delivery alone is $6,000 – $8,000 for a normal pregnancy and the cost increases if it is a high risk pregnancy.

California insurance regulators settled with two of that state’s biggest health insurers in July (2008) over claims they had illegally dropped coverage for 2,200 people after they became ill and filed claims. Anthem Blue Cross and its competitor Blue Shield agreed to pay $13 million in fines and restore coverage.

State investigators found Blue Cross used a computer program to systematically investigate and cancel the policies of pregnant women and the chronically ill. When the investigators examined 90 randomly selected rescission cases, they found violations of state law in every single one.

But preventing insurance companies from maximizing profits is un-American! Doing so along with allowing Adam and Steve or Jen and Eve to file their income tax jointly will bring about the absolute victory of the USSR! retroactively! No, really, it will cause an unstable time vortex the likes of which even Jean-Luc Picard would be hard pressed to deal with and change history starting with the election of Carter! Carter would be president for 18 terms! The Apocalypse! The seas would boil, rivers would turn to blood, and ice would be found on Mars!

Think of the future of all those insurance processors to be! AIG would declare bankruptcy while hosting $400,000 executive spa sessions! The horrors!

One of many ludicrous resons they cancel people for insurance.

If anyone ever asks my why I quit after 2 1/2 months working with these crooks, here's a perfect example why. After receiving phone calls from people almost everyday complaining about things like they were canceled for having food poisoning or having past food poisoning count as a pre-existing condition, the thought of working for people who do these kind of things made me sick.

A couple days ago I told a guy about how pregnancy was regarded as a pre-existing condition and he said that pregnant women didn't deserve to have health insurance because they chose to get pregnant.

What do I say to people like that?
