There are major physiological reactions and changes that are triggered by the baby's first breath, whatever the developmental age. I'm definitely no doctor, but I realize that until that point, at least certain things in the brain are suppressed; if something as fundamental as the breathing reflex isn't yet present until birth, how can you be sure about other brain functions? At that moment, all kinds of functions "turn on": breathing begins, the heart goes from pumping at ~4% capacity to 100%, the baby shows the first signs of alertness... a whole host of things change. I think that often, the assumption is made that a few-minutes-old baby is identical to the fetus that was in the womb just before, but in reality, a huge number of things change in an instant. The moment of the first breath is probably only second to conception in this regard. Now, are these changes enough to make a 39-week fetus not a person? I don't know... but I certainly don't think it's a given that we can assume that everything that's true for a full-term newborn baby is necessarily true for a full-term fetus. |

And what I meant by "the breathing reflex" is what we have after birth: we breathe all the time... we don't even have to think about it. If we try to hold our breath, we build up more and more of a mental need to take a gasp. That's what I was getting at... not just the idea that the lungs can move a bit. |

Yeah, I was joking. I've just gotten so sick of debating this same issue for the past 3 days. You win Dallas. What can I say?

My post..no matter how much they are irritating you are not "spam".They are facts that are indisputable. I think you may just not be articualting what you are meaning very well.Because I can not believe you would argue that a cell is just a cell and it cant be identified as to what species. In this case human. If this is true..you have just halted human biological forensic science in its tracks. As well as disease prevention and cure research.Just to name a couple. Love Dallas

I wasn't "disbuting" (whatever that means) that a human cell couldn't be identified as that, I was argueing that a human cell was just a human cell, not a human. I apologize if I didn't make my point clear. |
