By calling themselves non-practicing Muslims, people still consider themselves to be Muslim, or they would introduce themselves to you as ex-Muslims or they would say that they used to be Muslim or that they were once Muslim.
They have not taken the actual step of rejecting Islam and renouncing it. Such former Muslims are known as "apostates," since they have formally rejected Islam. its simple if he was a muslim but has been a christian for 20 years he is apostate

Trust me, Jaiket, I am not a politically naive person, as are so many who have the right to vote. I will state that my "ideal" candidate would be an atheist, as by default they would have the greatest potential for being the most pragmatic. I have no interest in voting for anyone who has very strong religious affiliations, regardless of what those affiliations are. That being said, in all good conscience I could not vote for a person who believes the Qur'an to be the literal word of "god". I could not vote for someone who believe in a literal "Judgment Day". I could not vote for someone who believes that Muhammed [pbuh] was the "last" prophet of "god", although most sincerely, I hope we never are cursed again with any other who believes they are appointed by "god". Surely we have had enough of this kind of ilk by this stage in human development.

Likewise, I could not, in all good conscience, accept a person who strongly believed in the Bible as being the literal word of "god" either. The difference with Muslims is that believing the Qur'an is the literal word of "god" is a tenant of the faith. THAT makes choosing a Muslim for high office untenable, in my humble opinion.

i tend to agree with YmirGF, the prospect of a leader led by his religious convictions is a frightening possibility, i do not believe many politicians are as religious as they make out like most people but , to have in the 21st century the most powerful man on earth bowing down to a deity five times a day seems not only abstract and weird but a truly terrifying idea, thats my opinion
