I live within 10 mi. of Portland, so I'm aware of the prices. For just my husband and myself, I know I don't spend more than $300 a month--as long as we never eat out. So $160/mo. for one person is doable. It won't be easy; however, it never was meant to be easy. Just doable.
Use coupons. Buy in bulk. No convenience foods. Take sack lunches. No boxed cereals. Join the gleaners club--which is available in Portland because our area is so fertile. Make from scratch. ie. All baked goods, noodles, crackers, tortillas, granola, jams and syrups, all soups, and even soap and other cleaning products. (I've done it all.) Living off other taxpayers, shouldn't be easy. A couple of thoughts at cross purposes:
For a period while I was in school, I was living on $11 to $13 a week for food. It was by no means the best I've ever eaten, but I got all my required nutrition, never went hungry, and still had coffee. This was 7-8 years ago, but inflation hasn't doubled the cost of food since then. Actually, prices have dropped a bit on some items, since at the time the Canadian dollar was ~$0.65 US and it's around parity now. And that was when I was living in one room of a student apartment. No farm or even a vegetable patch. OTOH, people in need for the basics have enough to worry about without having to be shamed or made to do tricks to get support.

I clicked on your examples. I did not see anything that supports your claims.
I support a local food bank. Our shelves are full. We deny no one. The videos I could make at the local Walmart would prove you wrong, but I am not that mean spirited to do such a thing. The first of the month, 350 pound people with multiple baskets of food all paid for by food stamps. The poor and elderly riding a bus that picks them up at their home and takes them to the store. Our local clinic that bases a medical visit on your ability to pay. No one is turned away. I have a clear conscience. and stand by my statement that no one in America has to go hungry. I'm sure that some people have mental problems and may not be eating correctly, but that has nothing to do with lack of food. It would be real interesting to have folks on assistance weigh in every month to make sure they are getting enough.

I don't know, but their parents have no excuse.

Are you willing? |
