But why do they go without? Why don't they have food? As I asked in the above post--do the foodstamps not cover the whole month--if managed carefully?

No, they don't. For $0 countable monthly income, I'm alloted $160 per month in food stamps. And that just isn't enough with the price of food in Portland.

I had those skills because when I was a kid an adult took the time to teach me. Yes, I was lucky for that. I also grew up in an environment where that's what people did. People's memories of the Depression were still fresh when I was a kid. I learned gardening and canning simply by asking questions. |

How many do you feed on $160?

I'm implying that your idea of "opportunities" and their availability that you say poor people aren't taking advantage of, are false. You believe that all poor people are poor because it's their own fault for "being lazy" and not "educating/bettering themselves," and that's just ludacris. |

If you're a parent who works full time at minimum wage, you're still $1,500 below the poverty line, even when food stamps and EITC are throw in. This "well, they're selfish if they want the government to help them get food" statement is ridiculous.
By the way, $160 is, as far as I know, the maximum you can receive monthly, and it averages to around $5 a day. That's a worst-case-scenario type of event where you make no money. $5 a day isn't really selfish considering it's just food. It's not as if you can buy anything else with it considering it's all electronic now. |

I feed a family of three on 75 dollars a week. That is 25 dollars per person per week.
160 a month worth of food stamps is 40 dollars a week per person. I have worked out of town and used a mini fridge and microwave in a motel and made it on 20 dollars a week at save-a-lot. I even had snacks to watch TV with every night. I could afford to spend more but found it fun to see how cheaply I could get by on while I watched some of my co-workers spend that much a day to eat.
