According to the news last night, a resolution of some sort recognising the genocide of the Armenian people had "passed it's first hurdle" in Congress. The event was commentated upon (on the BBC) by a genocide scholar. This fellow described it as one of the better documented cases of genocide, so much so that a committee of scholars had voted to recognise it as so.
Yet President Bush had warned against the move. Whereas Condoleeza Rice seems to think it would have some bearing on stability on Middle East to pass such a resolution. Is it a good thing in itself to recognise this? Will it harm the relations between the USA and Turkey? Why is politics so bonkers?

It probably will throw a wrench into US-Turkey relations, unless both sides decide to politely ignore it. The Turkish government has always vehemently denied this genocide.

in the long run it does no good to skirt around such facts.
It is better to call a spade a spade and get it over with. Germany has admitted its genocidal ways, and can now move on. Turkey should do likewise.. political niceties will not help....

Why are they even voting? It happened last century and most people over accept it as a fact. They should be doing something have the Darfur genocide.

For all the comments, and not entirely inaccurate, about Bush being a bit obtuse in the realm of diplomacy, Nancy Pelosi is demonstrating a dangerous level of stupidity by pushing this vote.
Her aim is to upset the Turks and drive a wedge into the coaltion trying to stabilize Iraq.Everyone wants our troops to come home, but the timing of this recognition has ZERO to do with preventing future atrocities and EVERYTHING to do with partisan politics.

I think we should recognize all genocides -- cause the truth is only Turkey is denying that it's a genocide. And we should recognize the American Genocide.

I wonder if we shouldn't have recognized the Holocaust just to "quell" the possibility of German dissatisfaction.
