I agree with The Seeker and ML. I honestly don't give a damn what the motivation is for a crime (unless it's something like killing in self-defense). If somebody commits a crime, they should take the same penalty whether or not they hated the person or group they targeted or not.

I agree too. It seems that hate crimes are dangerously close to 'thought crime'. On the other hand, the legal system examines motive in murder versus manslaughter, premeditation, and so on. Still, I don't see why someone who beats me up should get a lesser penalty than someone who beats up a 'more protected' person.
