Not always. Illegals typically (word choice is on purpose) leave their families in their home country, sending financial support out of the country. Those children aren't always in the school system, but they could be if one or both of their parents are given legal status.

Further, legal status would allow access to programs that were previously off limits.

My point is this is a slippery slope. Legal status would mean that some 12 million people would go from being low-skilled illegal immigrants to low-skilled legal migrants.

That said, I think this conversation is happening with the assumption we're talking about the stereotypical Hispanic illegal immigrant from Mexico picking strawberries in a field all day. There are many, many other illegal immigrants - both skilled and unskilled - from other countries living and working within the United States. I recently read somewhere (and doggone if I can find it!) that as many as half of the illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. are Canadian, however they are a largely transparant group because they blend in by skin color, language, and education.

From what I've read, many economist agree America's economy would fail if all illegal immigrants were shipped back.

There's a difference between eating the fruits/vegies and saying having cheap fruits/vegies is a benefit of having illegals.

So, let me ask you this - if the illegals get amnesty, should they be paid a living wage?
