You'd think the same people who backed him would research his position on abortion.

His name has been tossed around the conservative spheres for the past few months. I think it's all overblown, but we'll see.

The only people who are backing Thompson are the Evangelical Christians. That's enough for me to know that I don't want him to be our president.

I kinda like Fred Thompson. In my liberal circles, we saw him as a serious threat because he's moderate enough that people might vote for him against a Dem. But if the GOP faithful would rather go with someone more extreme...

Jonny, I am disappointed in you. That statement sounds almost as bad as some of the things we hear from Romney opponents.

Well if his views are diametricly opposed to evangelical christians then he is justified in not liking a candidate that they support. I am not sure if Thompson's only supporters are ECs but that is another issue. If they are and Jonny does not agree with them then he can oppose a candidate they endorse. He is not making any qualitaive claim about them just that he does not agree.

Evangelical Christians are a diverse lot, ranging from the politics of fear spewed by James Dobson on the right to the progressive populist politics of Jim Wallis on the left. To say that you're against someone just because the person is an evangelical Christian would be like saying that you're against someone just because the person is a Catholic. It doesn't say anything about the political views of the person unless one is relying on incorrect stereotypes.

And that is a posibilty. I was jsut making a distinction between an assumption based on personal sterotypes and the kind of deliberate misrepresentation and distortion that some of the tracts against Romney has been guilty of.
