CNN reports:

"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation," Sharpton said Monday during a debate with Hitchens at the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts headquarters.

Why is it ok to make bigoted attacks on LDS but if this was said of a Jew or Muslim there would be immediate and serious repercussions?

I don't think it is okay. But most people find it acceptable because, from what I've observed, people still think LDS are nutjobs.

i think it's down to the amount of misconceptions about the LDS faith... he would equally get away with it if he had said that about a Wiccan candidate. it's not right or fair.

Then most people would also find it acceptable to do the same thing to the mentally handicapped and insane.

So "most people" think it would be terrible to say something like that about a Jew because while they are different, they aren't "crazy". However, since LDS are different AND crazy, it is just fine.....

probably true but I don't see how that equates to being able to say something like that. I bet most of society doesn't really know what Muslims believe either but if someone said something like that about a muslim, they would be out of a job...

I don't know about that. Glen Beck is still on air after questioning whether or not Congressman Ellison had ties to terrorism.
