I didn't see any comments by Obama that he favors censorship (more like "self-censorship" perhaps). I don't think its a major issue-- but presidential candidates typical talk about moral leadership issues, and I think this is one. I don't want to completely get this off the airwaves either. They have a right to their ideas. On prime time or something is another thing.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday questioned the way some rappers talk about women in songs, saying the lyrics are similar to the derogatory language used by fired radio talk show host Don Imus.

"We've got to admit to ourselves, that it was not the first time that we heard the word 'ho,' Obama told a crowd of about 1,200 at a fundraising dinner for the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus in Columbia. "Turn on the radio station. There are a whole lot of songs that use the same language ... we've been permitting it in our homes, and in our schools and on iPods."

"If it's not good for Don Imus, I don't know why it's good for us. If we don't like other people to degrade us, why are we degrading ourselves?" Obama said to applause.

Great yet another person who would like to tape peoples mouths shut because he doesn't like what he hears.

If people don't like rap music, turn it off! Simple!

Every generation in the 20th century has spoken out against the musical expression of the youth at the time. Jazz would warp the mind and make people act like animals.
Rock and roll was the tool of the devil rotting the minds of our youth. An appeal to the community to enlighten themselves is comendable but ultimately in vain. I'm not fooled.

That's possible, and there's a side of me that wonders whether some of the more mainstream music--noteably Country Western--that may well be as derogatory (racism, mysogeny, encouragement of lynch mobs, etc.) as gangsta rap. It's also possible that types of songs you've referenced didn't openly encourage people to take guns to the street and rape young women.

You know this whole Imus situation is sickening to me. I am not one to say if he deserved to be fired...only his bosses are. Ultimately it was they're decision...so the attention should be on them, not rap music. Rap now day's is what Rock used to be...people dont like what they dont understand. Sure there are some questionable and IMO, dumb rap songs made by some "gangsta" rappers but as a whole it is generally good. Whether you like it or not.
IMO alot of people (all over the place, aka. "internet") use this Imus situation to bash rap music and in turn, disguise they're hate for black people and black culture.

Ps. I should know...I live on both sides of the "fence"...Black/White.
