If they get paid under the table, they may not be paid at all, and there's nothing they can do about it. It's a fairly common thing here for a guy to work a day's work, and then have the schmo who picked him up at the Circle K refuse to take him back or pay him. So what's a guy supposed to do? Call the cops?

If they get paid above board, they're paying more taxes than just the sales tax, which everyone pays. So they get to pay taxes for services they'll never be able to collect on. Ever look at how much FICA takes from your paycheck? It's a hefty percentage. But you'll never be able to claim Social Security benefits or Medicare or Medicaid for that matter. Even though you pay taxes.

Illegal immigrants are hardly getting a free ride out of all of this. If anyone is getting a benefit, it's all of us that get services cheaper than if we had to hire our own and actually pay attention to labor laws.

Alan, I've hired men I presumed to be illegals to help with my business. I live in the part of Atlanta that is, well, swamped with illegals is not an exaggeration.

The guys I pick up at the Circle K, the day laborers, don't pay income or payroll taxes. Everything else, they pay. They pay property and school tax through their rents, as all renters do. They pay sales tax, as everyone does. Gee, I don't suppose any of them are subject to the infamous "estate tax."

You don't think illegals have taxes withheld from their paychecks? IF they have a steady employment with a company, say in a restaurant, you can bet they have taxes withheld from their paychecks. It's only the day laborers who get paid under the board.

My hunch is that most illegals are being paid by companies that have them listed as legal workers (via fake SSNs). It's just a hunch, but I suspect it's true that the majority of illegals in this country have jobs in restaurants and with corporations that required them to produce a fake ID to get hired. Those illegals would, of course, have withholding taken from their paychecks.
