The HIV immigration ban is a good thing. (America, POV)

Maize's thread got me thinking...we really don't need just anyone to immigrate to the states. A filter system is not a bad idea. But some people think otherwise:

The United States has one of the harshest immigration policies in the world where HIV-positive individuals are concerned. In general, an HIV-positive foreign national is not permitted to immigrate (permanently reside) in the United States, or even visit here, unless he or she qualifies for a very narrowly defined waiver. Immigration Equality believes that the “HIV ban” on immigration is discriminatory and bad policy.

For my part, I'd rather not see this ban lifted. When there are so many people who want to immigrate here, why do we need to import those with communicable & life-threatening diseases? We don't.

It's a tricky subject, Faint. Quite frankly, when it comes down to it, it comes down to 'discrimination' and the selection which goes against the principles of human rights.

Talk to ChriP (For example) - because I know what he once posted that got me thinking; "Countries should have no barriers, no boundaries; folk ought to be able to go wherever they please"

Personally, I see that as containing too much of the 'idealist' scenario. But I understand his principle. HIV sufferers have a right to the better living conditions, maybe better health care, don't you think?

Right, because people with HIV don't have families who love them and shouldn't be around "normal" people. What's next? Revoking those with HIV their citizenship and forcably deporting them elsewhere? Perhaps we should just round them all up and shoot them, then the "normal" people won't have to worry about them anymore. Afterall, people with HIV aren't human anymore anyways.

What about the discriminatory laws against same sex couples sponsering their partners for immigration (which is what my thread was about)?

I think in the case of HIV+ individuals, the right of U.S. citizens to not be exposed to more carriers outweighs the rights of the carriers to come here. This is not discrimination as you seem to be implying. As a similar example, I also advocate banning smokers from public buildings. My right to clean health outweighs your right to smoke near me.

I used to think that too, but there are too many inequalities to allow this. If the wealthy nations imported the impoverished and diseased citizens of, say, Africa--it would most likely destroy us. Second metaphor...it would be similar to a wealthy family in Beverly Hills allowing about two thousand homeless & sick people to live on their property and in their home. What do you think that would do to the wealthy family's way of life?

Yes. In their own country. If it's not available, that's called "bad luck".

They aren't saying this... What are the requirements we should follow when figuring out who we allow into the nation? Do people who have highly contagious diseases not have families and people who love them? Where exactly should we draw the line for who we allow into the country? I wouldn't imagine a immigrant who has AIDS would be a very productive member of society during the last bit of their life.

Yes, everyone who we deny citizenship to should be run out and shot! That is exactly what this proposal is saying...

Making absurd statements like this only weaken your case... Willfully following the slippery slope fallacy is no way to go about debating.
