even public schools send letters home about pnemonia or lice outbreaks! If schools can be held responsible for such a thing shouldn't the government be held accountable when they knowingly stand by while people are dying?

Back on topic...
The ban on allowing HIV infected people into the country is, I believe, not so much a public health concern but an erroneous assumption on the part of some that still believe AIDS and HIV to be a gay disease. Banning HIV infected people from entering the country, these officials believe, will keep out more gay people - which is just wrong. This is course just my opinion based the way gay people are treated by the government in this country.

The first vector in this country was male homosexuals. That's ancient history. Now it's moved through IV drug users and from there into monogamous women who have no clue what their hubby's been up to. In Africa, the first vector of transmission was heterosexuals, and so it's remained. Do you understand why I thought you meant something stupid earlier, when I keep reading and I see this as well? Please keep working on getting educated on this subject and in time you'll know better than to say such things, and then you won't be mistaken for meaning to say something stupid and bigoted. ![]() 20 years ago I was just lucky. I lived a stone's throw from the CDC, and had (still have) friends who work there as epidemiologists. You don't have to be lucky now to get reliable scientific information. Just type www.google.com. |

See! It is biased against gay people, because if a gay person has HIV they cannot get the waiver unless they meet one of the other requirements ([be an] unmarried son or daughter, or the minor unmarried lawfully adopted child of a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; or have a son or daughter who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident).

This is pretty much what a special deal for HIV looks like from my pov as well, thus my previous comments about it being designed to keep out gays and black Africans. It's wrongheaded on several counts. One of them you mentioned. The other I outlined (sorta) in my comments on vectors of transmission and other comments. There isn't a valid medical reason for keeping someone out of the country just because they are HIV positive. And if we were really serious about stopping the spread of HIV, there are a lot of things we could do in terms of public education. But certain religious fanatics still labor under the assumption that HIV is a "gay disease." Heck, even in this thread you can see the still common idea that everyone who gets HIV somehow deserves it. Not only is that untrue, but one wonders why that sort of blame isn't affixed to, oh, say those suffering from other diseases, like heart disease and strokes? Funny how NO ONE goes up to a heart attack victim and says, "Well, you got yourself here, so tough luck and no help for you." Things that make you go hmmm.... This law seems more designed as a sop to certain political constituencies than as a means to deal with a public health issue. |

But if the main spread of the disease is sticking your johnson into a diseased crack whore then NO the Government isn't at fault at all. Now, if the Government HAS to police people and babysit people at this kind of level then I think it should have the power to start monitoring gay night clubs and black neighborhoods for offenders. If people have HIV and they are caught having sex....off with their heads. I'm not so sure people will be ok with that and there is good reason, the Gov't isn't a social babysitter.
