So what do you all think about the United States government paying reparations for different groups they have oppressed? There are a few different categories and types of reparations...
1) Reparations given to the Japanese people who were sent to the camps during WW2 (they were given 20,000 in 1990... Basically asking if this was too much/not enough/not needed in the first place) 2) Giving reparations to African Americans because of slavery. 3) Giving reparations to the southern states belonging to the confederacy for destroying their land during the civil war. 4) Giving reparations to the Native Americans for the whole stealing their land bit. 5) Giving international reparations (to say Vietnam and other countries we have done wrong to) So, what do you all think? I myself think we should only give reparations to people who are still alive that were oppressed by the United States... |

I was under the impression that we've given reparations to all of these folks. The reparations themselves may have been unjust, and if they were generous, people will always want (and likely deserve) more, but it's not as if we've done nothing.

Reparations are only given to ease the concience and get people off your back.
It is never done with out pressure. It is like forgiveness of sins No value unless you repent , with a free heart.

1) 20,000 to the Japanese in the camps and a formal apology. 2) Affirmative action is many times considered the reparations for the slavery bit... I don't think the government gave any money though which tends to be what the advocates for this want. 3) The north did help rebuild the southern states after the war but there are apparently some people still saying there needs to be money paid to the south for the civil war... 4) Native Americans get reservations and casinos 5) I am not sure what reparations we gave to people over seas for things we have done wrong... So I guess the question is do any of these groups deserve any more, did not deserve any reparations, or got exactly what they deserved? |

We've been giving blacks reparations for years. I'd rather give those who want reparations a free ticket to their native country. I think reparations are BS.

People shouldn't feel guilty that their ancestors were ignorant and guilty of genocide or violations of human rights; nor should people feel entitled to anything because their ancestors were the victims. Everyone needs to live in the now. Let's look at the "indian" reservations and the black population...these groups (and those like them) do NOT deserve special privileges just because of their race. If they're poor, then what they deserve is national attention as to why their demographic has such trouble with upward mobility. Are the roadblocks internal or external? You tell me. Better yet--have them tell me. "Sir, why has your family been poor for five generations?" "Well, we don't get much good book learnin' out here in the swamp." BAM! Education problem. Fix that. "What about you miss, why are you poor?" "Well, I watch Jerry Springer all day while I wait for my foodstamps and..." KAPOW! Laziness issue. Figure out a way to motivate citizens to be productive--or (if they're unwilling) let them fade at the bottom of the heirarchy. Free handouts don't really help anyone in the long run. |

Agree almost completely. I wonder what Hockey would be like if we looked at the game through this lens. Teams getting rewarded for stunning defeats. Players getting reimbursed for getting injured during games. It would be GREAT!!!! One might never see another puck hit the ice. Reparations? YES, but done ONLY within a reasonable period of time after a given event. It should be a required part of the "mop up" operations. A few years back there was a big hubbub here in Canada regarding the "head tax" that was imposed on Asian, specically Chinese immigrants (Note: Legal immigrants!) they had to pay a fairly large price just to get in the country. Um... this was about 100 years ago... perhaps more. (I'd have to check.) Somehow I just do not feel "the love" on an issue like this. If it happened 10 years ago... sure, no problemo. When it gets down to it, why are we all not viciously attacking the Greek and the Romans for atrocities commited during the reign of their distant forefathers?

And most likely none of them were ever slaves, so no need for handouts.
