Furthermore, a budget is different from an appropriations bill, which is what actually spends money. A budget is simply the projected desire of how we'd like to spend the money.

Budget resolutions are policy plans. They are not appropriations bills, or spending bills, which actually allocate money for specific purposes.

In addition, this is a good article to put the whole budget debacle in historical proportions, rather than the republican want to pretend like this is a never-before-seen failure of government solely due to Obama.

He wouldn't have to be considering these extraordinary measures if the republicans would simply be reasonable.

Raising the debt ceiling is routine measure that happens every year or two. No one said boo about it when Bush raised it 7 (or 8) times during his tenure.

And as our credit downgrade indicated during the last republican economy hostage crisis, failure to raise the credit limit does far more damage than just raising it to PAY FOR THE STUFF WE ALREADY BOUGHT.

So if the republicans are willing to hold the American economy hostage again, then I am fully behind our president to do what it takes to make sure that they don't do lasting damage again.

We should point out that a vote to increase the debt limit doesn't increase spending directly. The spending was already authorized by other legislation, and now the Treasury Department needs a formal signoff to keep issuing debt. An analysis of the past 10 years of votes on the debt limit from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center shows the vote usually splits along partisan lines, with the president's party voting in support.

Just proves my point that this is largely just partisan bickering without any real substance, that raising the debt ceiling is a routine matter, and that the Republicans have taken it to a whole new level when they are willing to let America default on what we owe.

They did not tell us to have sex with ouselves either.

Clinton balanced the budget, mostly because he inherited a large social security and medicare tax increase from Regan that went into the general fund.

Still if I remember correctly, he also shut the government down to stop Congress from just spending more because we had more.

Congress has never seen a dollar they did not want to spend plus 40 more cents.

Two things, yes we have to raise the debt ceiling right now.

No, if we don't raise it, the government would not default on our debt. We still take in money, we just would not have that additional 40 cents.
