Our colleagues at PolitiFact Florida report that the House and the Senate had failed to pass a joint budget bill on four other occasions since 1983.

For fiscal year 2003, the Senate, under Democratic control in 2002, failed to pass a budget resolution of any kind. For fiscal years 1999, 2005 and 2007, the House and the Senate failed to reconcile their different bills and pass a compromise measure. In these latter three cases, the Republicans were in the majority in both chambers of Congress.

Furthermore, a budget is different from an appropriations bill, which is what actually spends money. A budget is simply the projected desire of how we'd like to spend the money.

Quote:
Budget resolutions are policy plans. They are not appropriations bills, or spending bills, which actually allocate money for specific purposes.
In addition, this is a good article to put the whole budget debacle in historical proportions, rather than the republican want to pretend like this is a never-before-seen failure of government solely due to Obama.

He wouldn't have to be considering these extraordinary measures if the republicans would simply be reasonable.

Raising the debt ceiling is routine measure that happens every year or two. No one said boo about it when Bush raised it 7 (or 8) times during his tenure.

And as our credit downgrade indicated during the last republican economy hostage crisis, failure to raise the credit limit does far more damage than just raising it to PAY FOR THE STUFF WE ALREADY BOUGHT.

So if the republicans are willing to hold the American economy hostage again, then I am fully behind our president to do what it takes to make sure that they don't do lasting damage again.

Did the Democrats hold the economy hostage and force a downgrade in our credit rating?

Quote:
We should point out that a vote to increase the debt limit doesn't increase spending directly. The spending was already authorized by other legislation, and now the Treasury Department needs a formal signoff to keep issuing debt. Some analysts have compared it to writing the check to cover a credit card bill for things you already charged.

Still, it's critical for the United States to keep paying its debts and experts say failure to do so could ultimately lead to chaos in the financial markets. The Obama administration has been pushing hard to have a debt limit vote approved, and the earlier the better. Officials say a drawn-out process could spook international financial markets. (See our story for a more in-depth discussion of the debt limit vote.)

The votes -- there have been 10 since 2001 -- are famous for political posturing, and President Barack Obama is no exception. Back in 2006, he joined with other Senate Democrats to vote against raising the debt limit, a measure supported by President George W. Bush.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills," Obama said. The Senate narrowly approved raising the limit along partisan lines, 52-48, with all Democrats opposed.

Typically, the party that controls the White House has had to take the difficult vote to raise the limit, while the other party was free to criticize. An analysis of the past 10 years of votes on the debt limit from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center shows the vote usually splits along partisan lines, with the president's party voting in support.
from HERE

Just proves my point that this is largely just partisan bickering without any real substance, that raising the debt ceiling is a routine matter, and that the Republicans have taken it to a whole new level when they are willing to let America default on what we owe.

They did not tell us to have sex with ouselves either.

Clinton balanced the budget, mostly because he inherited a large social security and medicare tax increase from Regan that went into the general fund.

Still if I remember correctly, he also shut the government down to stop Congress from just spending more because we had more.

Congress has never seen a dollar they did not want to spend plus 40 more cents.

Two things, yes we have to raise the debt ceiling right now.

No, if we don't raise it, the government would not default on our debt. We still take in money, we just would not have that additional 40 cents.

I couldn't find a thread entitled "Democrats Do The Darnedest Things", so here it goes.....
Ex-mayor's $1 billion gambling woes stun San Diego - Yahoo! News

What is it with Democrats & other people's money?

This isn't to say their aren't Publican crooks too, but with Dems touting
their superior morality with such shrill sanctimony, I love the irony.

This item regarding Jesse Jackson Jr & spouse popped up today also.....

They finally caught old Triple Jay
who might submit his plea today.
The pious scammer
could see the slammer
I hope for an extended stay.
